Rosatom outlined ways to develop the field of superconducting materials and products based on them

Experts discussed the current trends and opportunities for cooperation in the field of development and implementation of superconducting materials

On April 10, Rosatom Metal Tech LLC (an integrator company of Rosatom's Fuel Division in the Metallurgy area) held the "Development of superconducting materials and products based on them" round table. It was attended by more than 60 representatives from 34 scientific research and manufacturing enterprises.

The participants discussed the development and import independence of superconducting materials and products based on them, the prospects for their application, the possibilities of commercializing applied superconductivity, as well as the design and production of superconductors based on niobium-titanium alloy for various applications. It was noted that one of the main goals today is to strengthen mutual efforts of all interested parties to form a market infrastructure in the field of cryogenic and superconducting industries.

"Rusatom Metal Tech strives to consolidate the efforts of companies both inside and outside the Rosatom State Corporation in order to develop superconducting and cryogenic devices. It is also extremely important to perform the necessary work to be included in government programs and receive financial support from the state," said Andrey Andrianov, Director General of Rosatom Metal Tech LLC.

Special attention was paid to the prospects of introducing superconducting devices in various fields of science and technology. The Russian market is facing many technical and economic challenges that need to be overcome in order to make superconductivity an affordable and effective tool.

MRI machines can be noted among technologies that have been already implemented. Promising areas for superconductivity application include magnetic levitation transport, superconducting devices for energy transfer and conservation, quantum computers, tokamaks, and accelerators.

One of the key outcomes of the discussion was the decision to organize the annual "Superconducting and Cryogenic Technologies" All-Russian conference to bring together manufacturers, consumers and technology developers of superconducting materials and products based on them.

Russian companies are successfully implementing development projects and creating innovative solutions. The development of breakthrough technologies increases the competitiveness of both the nuclear industry and the domestic economy as a whole. Rosatom and its enterprises are actively involved in this work.

The Fuel Division of Rosatom State Corporation is the only full-cycle manufacturer of low-temperature superconductors in Russia. Industry projects on superconducting materials are managed by Rosatom Metal Tech LLC, and commercial production is implemented at the production site of Chepetsky Mechanical Plant JSC in Glazov.

The Fuel Division of Rosatom State Corporation (the management company is TVEL JSC) includes enterprises for the manufacture of nuclear fuel, conversion and enrichment of uranium, production of gas centrifuges, as well as research and development organizations. As the sole supplier of nuclear fuel for Russian nuclear power plants, TVEL provides fuel to a total of more than 70 power reactors in 15 countries, research reactors in nine countries around the world, as well as transport reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world is powered by TVEL fuel. The fuel division is the world's largest producer of enriched uranium, as well as the leader of the global market for stable isotopes. The division is actively developing new businesses in the field of chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, as well as decommissioning of nuclear facilities. Rosatom's industry integrators for additive technologies and power storage systems have been created in the TVEL circuit. www.tvel.ru

Rosatom Metallurgical Technologies LLC is a divisional integrator of the Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL in the field of Metallurgy. The tasks of developing the metallurgical business include, in particular, expanding the customer base in Russia and abroad, developing production facilities, and creating new alliances and partnerships. The technological partners of Rosatom Metallurgical Technologies LLC are enterprises specializing in the production of products made of refractory and light metals, as well as alloys based on them. The integrator consolidates the competencies of TVEL JSC enterprises in the field of metallurgy: ChMZ JSC, MSZ JSC, NCCP PJSC, Elemash Magnet LLC, NPO Centrotech LLC.
